Acadia Brigadoon, AXJ, OA, NF, RA, BN, CGC

Yesterday 13 year old Brig came back to Acadia after his owner, Holly, passed away.   Brig is the son of GChS. Acadia Stage Presence, CC- “Liza”, who passed away last year.   He is a half-brother to Aiden and Chica. Brig was in Liza’s first litter, born Thanksgiving week 2012 at the farm in Pennsylvania.

For many years, Mike and I hosted our families for Thanksgiving at the farm. My sister Beck’s 9 year old daughter, Cadence, was really hoping that Liza would have her puppies during their stay, but sadly, she did not.  Liza delivered November 27, after all of the guests had gone home.   Cadence is now a senior in college and has just been accepted into Vet school.

I feel so fortunate that Holly had included instructions in her last Will and Testament that he was to be returned to his breeder if she preceded him in death.   All of our puppies are sold with a contract stating:

“Not to abandon the dog at a shelter or rescue for the purpose of finding a new home or euthanasia.  If the buyer can’t keep the dog they must 1) notify Acadia Shelties and 2) offer the dog back to Acadia Shelties at no charge.  Buyer is responsible for any expenses incurred to return the dog to Acadia.  If the buyer has another prospective home, they must still notify Acadia Shelties.  If upon notification to Acadia Shelties, the buyer and Acadia Shelties mutually agree on a third party as the new owner/home, Acadia Shelties must be provided with the name, address and phone number of the third party.”

Over the 28 years I have been breeding dogs, I have only had a handful of instances where the life circumstances of a dog have changed.  I hope that truly only a handful of our dogs have had lifechanging circumstances.  That is the case for Brig.

I was first contacted by Holly’s friend Kris that Holly was in the hospital and Brig was safe with a friend.  Kris told me that once Holly got out the hospital and rehab she would be going to assisted living where she would be allowed to have Brig.   That sounded good.  Holly and Brig would be together.  Sadly, Holly never made it to assisted living and the home that was caring for Brig while he was waiting to be reunited with Holly couldn’t keep him long-term.  No problem, he is always welcome with us.

Brig seems to be taking this change in stride.  Resilience is a great trait.  We are proud of him and happy to have him back.

Herding Group 1 and new *GCh.* Acadia Essential

This weekend Warren Won the Herding Group!  It is so much fun to show a dog that enjoys the show and is a good partner.  I love showing Warren and every time we win Best of Breed and get to show in the Herding Group I always feel he could win it.  This weekend he proved me right.   The towel  I had on my grooming table that day was the Group 1 towel Warren's grandmother, Liza, had won at the Mid-Susquehanna Valley Kennel Club show many years ago.

New ROM !! Ch. Acadia Opinion Provided, ROM

Chica is now a Register of Merit (ROM).  This designation is for females who have produced 5 or more Champion offspring and males who have produced 10 or more champions.   Chica is the first ROM for Acadia although others have come close.

Ch. Sunburst Acadia Here I Come, "Carrie", should have been my first.  She produced 4 champions, 1 additional son with 12 points, 1 major (1 major short of the championship), and another daughter with a major.  Six show winners in all, but only 4 champions.   While she did not achieve the ROM status, Carrie is the anchor of my breeding program which consists of 9 consecutive generations of champion girls on the tail-female line.  This line is on Carrie's Page and Dove's page.

Chica is the 8th consecutive generation of Champion girls. Her father is "Aidan"-  GCh. Acadia's Stage Director and her mother is the Best In Show winner, Century Club member, GChS. Acadia Stage Presence, CC.

Chica is the mother of:

GChB Acadia Gregarious, BCAT

Ch. Acadia Peggin Iced Latte, RA, PT, OJP, FDC, VCX

Ch. Acadia Trusted Opinion, FDC

Ch. Acadia Everyone's Opinion

Ch. Peggin Acadia Breve, PT, RN, NJP, TKN, FDC, CGC, VCX

and..

Best Of Breed at Tri-State SSC club specialty show

Best Of Breed!!

From the classes.  Acadia Essential, aka, "Warren", wins a 5 Point major.  He went on to defeat 8 champions for Best Of Breed at the Tri-State SSC specialty under esteemed judge Rick Thompson.

What a Trill it was to have Rick point to Warren, and then say, “what a handsome boy” as he handed me the ribbon.  Warren was shown 1 other time, the day he turned 6 months, and I decided to let him grow up.  He is a fun dog.  Confident and happy and I couldn’t have been more proud of him!

Warren is Liza's grandson.  His mother, GCh. Acadia Light Up the Stage, aka, "Lolo", is the daughter of Liza and the sister of Aiden.  HIs sister is Ch. Acadia All Aglow, "Granby".

Happy 14th Birthday Liza

Happy 14th Birthday to GCHS Acadia Stage Presence, CC- aka- Liza.

I am so happy to be able to kiss Liza today and wish her a happy 14th birthday.  She is still climbing the (uncarpeted) stairs by herself- even if it is a little slower.

Peer Recognition is the Best kind! Thank you Sherry Deeds

I was so honored when Sonia from pedigreelines contacted me to say that they were doing a new feature entitled, "What do judges look for"- and they were asking top sheltie breeder judges to pick one term in the standard and a dog they felt illustrated the point.   She told me that they had asked breeder/judge Sherry Deeds to pick a word and dog- and Sherry picked Balance and CASSIA.

I am just So Honored!!    Thank you to Sherry for this honor, and to Sonia for doing this series- it's a good one.

**NEW CHAMPION** Acadia Opinion Provided- aka- Chica

Chica finished in Grand Fashion winning a 4 point major to finish when she just needed 4 single points.  Chica is a funny girl with a sense of humor.  I feel so fortunate to have her.  I hope that she will be my first Registrar of Merit (ROM)- which means (for girls) that she produced 5 champion offspring.  It is a coveted title, and one that has eluded me so far.

To date, Chica is the mother of GCh. Acadia's Gregarious, BCAT, Ch. Acadia Trusted Opinion, FDC, and Ch. Acadia Peggin Iced Latte, HT.  Waiting in the wings are Acadia Popular Opinion (Tecla) and Acadia Everyone's Opinion (Trestle).

Chica is the 8th Consecutive generation of Champion bitches and the 6th consecutive generation of Acadia bred bitches.  I am hoping that Tecla and Trestle will follow in her footsteps.

July - 13 years ago -2010

July 30- Today would have been my dad's 94 birthday.    This July Liza turned 13.  She is still with us.

July 2010 was a monumental month in that year.  I had started a new job in March which was proving to be challenging and my father had been diagnosed with Cancer.  In other posts from 2010 I thank Guy Jeavons, Grandgables shelties, for allowing his new champion GCh.P Grandgables The Frat Boy, ROM, ROMC (he didn't have all of those titles at that time) to come visit so I could breed him to the sisters, GCh. Acadia Presence of Mind (Cassia) and Ch. Acadia Peaceful Garden.  They were both due the end of July.  As we now know, they were born the same week my father passed away.

This past week both GCh.S. Acadia Stage Presence, CC ("Liza') and GCh. Acadia Serenity ("Serena") celebrated birthdays.  Those two girls were so significant to me and at a time that was challenging, they proved to be a bright spot.   Liza was my team-mate who made all of  my dog show & breeder dreams come true.  Serena and I won the Bred-by Exhibitor class at the ASSA National.  That is the one class that I feel is the most important and she was the one to win it.  Posts about the these two girls can be found through-out the blog.

Happy Birthday dad, Liza and Serena.

Mother's Day- don't bother sending flowers or cards- but bones or dog treats would be nice

I Love my MOTHERS!   I currently have my 9th generation of young girls growing up- they are:

Daughters of Acadia Opinion Provided "Chica"

Tecla
Acadia Popular Opinion, "Tecla"

Acadia
Everyone's Opinion, "Trestle"

Daughter of GCh. Acadia Light Up The Stage, "Lolo"

Acadia All Aglow, "Granby"

GChS. Acadia's Stage Presence, CC, "Liza" is the mother to both Chica and Lolo.  When Chica was delivering the litter of puppies that had Tecla and Trestle, Liza was in the room too and as Chica was having contractions and delivering the next puppy, and I was putting the already delivered puppies into the warming box.  Liza was drying them off by licking them.   I was busy with the task of delivering the litter and I didn't think about pictures at the time- and now I sure wish I had taken the time to think about how much it would mean to me later.

Liza

Liza kept wanting to get into the warming box with them, but it is not big enough for that, so I made her stand next to the box for her self imposed duties.  She was 11.5 years old at the time.  I was so impressed, and of course I anthropomorphized that she knew these were her grand-puppies and she wanted to make sure they had the best start in life.   I don't really know if she understood they are her grandchildren, but I do know that she is a a Super Mom.

Chica takes after Liza as a Super Mom and it is my hope that Tecla and Trestle will one day take after their mother.  The saying good mothers, make good mothers has held true for me so far, and I hope to continue and celebrate Mother's Day every year for many more to come.

To my own mother, who passed away 6 years ago- You
were a Super Mom too and I miss you more than tongue can tell.

Group 1 at 11.5 years old- GChS Acadia Stage Presence, CC -the girl's still got it!

Amazing!!  I have been on a High all Week long!  Liza is 11.5 years old, and she looks really good, so I decided to enter her as a Veteran at the National.  As a refresher, I entered her in a few dog shows.   Sunday, at the First Company Governor's Foot Guard Athletic Association dog show, Mr. Robert Robinson honored her by awarding us a 1st Place in the Herding Group.  The show had a large entry, and it was really, really, an honor.

Because of her age, and the fact that we showed in the breed ring at 11:00, and groups were not going to start until 3:30, and the Herding Group was the 4th group, I wasn't going to stay.  I didn't want to wear her out too much.   While taking the Best of Breed picture I mentioned to the judge that I didn't think we were going to stay.   He said, "that's too bad."--------    Well, that changed my mind.  THANK GOD we STAYED!!

When we were taking the group photo Mr. Robinson said, "when you are judging the breeds through the day, you know who you are sending to the group and you get a sense of what to expect."    He liked her from the start.  A week later and I am Still Flying High!   Liza is Amazing, and I am so lucky to have her.

Acadia's Stage Director wins a major

Shows have been few and far between, but this weekend Aiden made good use of his chances.  On Saturday he won a 4pt major under esteemed breeder-judge Tom Coen.

A snow storm was forecasted for Sunday and some of the competitors went home after the show on Saturday.  It wasn't snowing yet- and we have waited Months for a show- so we stayed.  It paid off and Aiden was Winners Dog again for another 2 points.

It was made even better when his sister, Acadia Light Up The Stage, was Winners Bitch.  Aiden was then Best of Breed and Lolo was Best of Opposite over a special.  Sunday these two won everything there was to win.

The snow had started to come down and I didn't end up staying for the group.  It snowed about 4 or 5 inches and the drive home was slow- but Oh Wow was the weekend worth it!

Carrots- my new favorite chew toys

Carrots make great chew toys.  They are 100% edible, 100% digestible, easy to find, and inexpensive.  The larger the better if they will be used for recreational chewing.   I had given the baby carrots as treats, but then I bought these large carrots to feed our mules and I was reminded how great the big carrots are for the dogs to just chew.

They are so happy

GCh. Acadia Stage Presence, "Liza", continues to win the Herding Group

Liza has been such a dream come true.  She has won the Herding Group 18 times now.  One of my favorite sayings is, "overnight success takes 15 years to achieve."  - well, I have been breeding shelties now for more than 15 years, but Liza certainly has been an overnight success.    Showing her makes me wish that I could just attend dog shows- she is that much fun and I look forward to each weekend we get to go.

4 of the 7 generations of Champion girls

Don Moore brought Ch. Genna over for a visit.  She will be 12 in August.  We took pictures of the 4 generations -
Left to right is youngest to oldest:
GCh. Acadia Stage Presence- "Liza"
GCh. Acadia Presence of Mind- "Cassia"- mother of Liza
Ch. Acadia Peace of Mind- "Dove"-   mother of Cassia
Ch. Acadia It's My Treat- "Genna"   - mother of Dove

It was so exciting to see the girls together.  Genna looks great and it made for a nice afternoon.  In my head I had this "advertisement quality' picture- but 4 dogs at the same time proved to be too difficult for me and Mike to photograph exactly as I had envisioned.  I wish that I had an "assistant" to call who could have  helped me get them "show groomed" and then pay attention to details.  For example, in my favorite picture from the afternoon, my blouse had gaped open-  how come no one noticed?  Although the girls are not all "fluffed up", I don't have make-up on, and the sun was too bright- I LOVE this picture.  I LOVE the girls.
